Thankfully, if you’re not sure that you can spend the ~$130 for Lightroom, you do have another (free) alternative to try out first: RAWTherapee! It’s quite a powerful alternative too! (Unless you have unlimited time, and don’t mind getting carpal tunnel syndrome.) GIMP is just not the ideal tool for editing pictures, period. 🙂Īctually, all photographers need an addition to the GIMP!. So, the question is, how many pictures are you editing, and how much adjusting do you need to make? If you shoot 100s of RAW photos in a month, and need to edit them, then there’s no question in my mind which sort of software you need. GIMP, on the other hand is geared more towards pixel-level editing, it mainly does small, local adjustments. Lightroom is made especially for photographers, and it’s main purpose is making global adjustments to photos. As I’ve said in previous posts, the difference between GIMP and Lightroom is in their intended purpose.
